Renowned Qinghai Tourist Attractions
Ta’er Monastery

Ta'er (Kumbum, in Tibetan) Monastery is located in the village of Huangzhong, some 25 kilometers, or about a half-hour's drive, from the captial city of Xining. The origin of the monastery's name is owing to a legend with at least two variants and two subvariants, wherein the blood of TsongKhapa came to give birth to a banyan tree (aka sandalwood tree). In one version of the legend, at TsongKhapa's birth, the father buried the placenta here; in another, drops of blood from TsongKhapa’s umbilical cord are to have spilled on the ground here. The banyan tree in question, known as the "Tree of Great Merit", according to one subvariant legend produced 100,000 leaves, while another subvariant legend says that the bark of this remarkably complex tree (or perhaps cluster of trees) produced 100,000 impressions of Buddha. Kumbum means "100,000" in Tibetan.

Qinghai Lake and Bird Island

Qinghai Lake receives its water from 23 rivers that empty into it, and there are 2 additional, albeit quite small, lakes to the east: Gahai Lake, a saltwater lake covering an area of over 10 square kilometers; and Erhai Lake, a freshwater lake covering an area of some 4 square kilometers. Panning in a circle on the banks of Qinghai Lake on a typical summer's day, one sees the deep-green mountains in the distance that encircle a shiny green belt of grass with the bluish lake in the center. Between the mountains and the lake, the land is an open, flat prairie, a perfect pasture for the grazing of yaks, camels, and sheep. As well, one will certainly see flocks of white sheep—and the tents of the herdsmen who tend them—dotting the sea of grass that surrounds the lake.

For visitors, the most noteworthy attraction at Qinghai Lake is the famous Bird Island bird refuge. It is situated northwest of the lake and covers an area of slightly less than 1 square kilometer, yet it is the transitory home to countless numbers of migratory birds which arrive here from Southern China and Southeast Asia. Such birds include the spotted head wild goose, brown head wild goose, fish gull, red sheldrake, cormorants, and black-neck crane.

Kunlun Mountain

With a length of 1200 kilometers and a width of 60-120 kilometers in Qinghai province, Kunlun Mountain reaches its highest altitude of 6860 meters on the Bugedaban Peak. Most of the mountains in the province belong to the Kunlun Mountain Chain which was titled by the ancient people as the “primogenitor of mountains”, the “forefather of Dragon descendants” and “Dragon Mountain”. Kunlun Mountain being one of the cradles for Chinese Legends and Stories, a lot of fairy stories had been composed concerning about or relative to it, including the well-known Pilgrimage to the West, Chang Er Flies to the Moon, Tale of the White Snake and so on. At the Kunlun Mountain Pass, the altitude suddenly rises to 4700 meters from 2800 meters and the temperature and pressure drop greatly. Full of power and grandeur and covered by snow, the mountain is enchanting indeed with its white peak like a sharp sword reaching the sky. On the top of the Kunlun Mountain, you will feel like roaming on the sky and it is hard for you to distinguish the nature from man since they have combined together.

Besides its wonderful landscapes, the Kunlun Mountain can also produce the elegant color jade, namely Kunlun jade. It is so amazing to think that such delicate jade is out of such hard and dangerous snow mountain. Amazing sights of rare birds and animals chanting each other can be seen at any time on the Snow Mountain, grassland or Gobi, which composes a beautiful natural picture.
